Where is Shibuya/Harajuku

Shibuya and Harajuku is where many teenagers gather and always want to visit. In this chaotic town, lots of trendy fashion stores, variety stores, and restaurants line up. Shibuya gets out of control when there are celebrations or events. On Halloween, New Year’s Eve, and when Japan’s national team winning sport games etc, men and women of all ages gather to Shibuya to celebrate. The town becomes literally chaotic that polices are dispatched often. Once you walk a little way, you’ll find a shrine and can feel the history of Shibuya. 
 

 

 

Shibuya main sightseeing spots

“The statue of the famous dog born in Japan”
Hachiko statue

This small Hachiko statue is the most popular meeting spot near Shibuya scramble crossing. Hachiko is the name of the actual dog in 1920s and famous for its loyalty to his owner. This Akita dog would go to Shibuya station everyday to wait for his owner coming back home from work. Even after the owner died, Hachiko still walked to Shibuya station everyday to wait his return for about 10 years. This statue was built to commemorate this loyal dog, Hachiko.

Shibuya Scramble Crossing

This crossing is the symbol of Shibuya. About five hundred thousand people walk this crossing in one day at maximum! It is the largest and famous crossing in the world. Three thousand people walk through at once so keep walking with your head up!

Shibuya 109

The second symbol of Shibuya, Shibuya 109. From Shibuya Scramble crossing, you can see the cylindrical building. Lots of stores are lined up and youth culture are spreaded from here.

“The first official Nintendo store in Japan!”
Nintendo Tokyo

Nintendo Tokyo is opened in Shibuya PARCO on November 22nd, 2019 as the first Nintendo directly managed store in Japan. It is the second store in the world (the first store is at New York). This is surely an exciting place for all the generations. Game equipments, games, about 1,000 kinds of Nintendo character goods are sold. More than half of the goods were created by Nintendo itself so those are totally original items. Visitors can also enjoy special events and game trials. There are lots of limited products you can only get at this Nintendo Tokyo!

“One of the rare shrines that has a real sumo ring”
Shibuya Hikawa Jinja Shrine

This shrine is located about 15 minutes walk from Shibuya station. It is very quiet and nice atmosphere with greenery. You may not believe that you’re in Shibuya. This shrine also has a real sumo ring which is quite rare. At Edo period, there were 3 famous shrines playing sumo games in Tokyo and one of them is this Shibuya Hikawa shrine.

Tyffonium Shibuya, a themepark using highest technology, was opened on November in 2018. Harajuku main sightseeing spots

“One of the prestigious shrines in Japan”
Meiji Jingu Shrine

A very famous shrine in Tokyo. Once you step in Meiji Jingu Shrine, you can’t believe you’re in crowded town, Harajuku. Spiritual atmosphere makes you feel refreshed. Kiyomasa no Ido (Kiyomasa’s well) is also famous here. It is the well of spring water which is rare in Tokyo.

Summary

Shibuya and Harajuku are always where the young long for. Even the streets are filled with stores for younger generations, once you walk a little away there are big greenery and shopping town for adults, Omotesando. This area certainly has a mixture of futuristic and traditional spots.
